Annie's Swedish Coffee Parties

are held on the second Saturdays during September, October, November, & December

Annie, Gammelgården’s oldest resident, is the inspiration behind our traditional Swedish 3-course Coffee Party. A perfect way to celebrate birthdays, Red Hat outings, a family get together, or a special treat for yourself and a friend! Afterwards, visit the Butik gift shop to find wonderful Scandinavian gifts.

September & October dates include tours of our five historic buildings. November & December dates include history / Swedish Jul program.

Bluegrass & Lemonade

is enjoyed on the fourth Sunday of the month from 2-4pm.

Enjoy a lazy Sunday afternoon of pickin’, plunkin’ & harmonizin’ with pick-up Bluegrass music. Free lemonade for all in the shaded back yard of the Gammelgården. No charge for playin’ or listenin’. In case of rain, we will be inside the Välkommen Hus.

*Guided tours of the five historic buildings are given at 1 & 2:30 for $7. Purchase tickets in the Butik gift shop.

Comin' to Amerika

Is a 2- day summer camp where young people experience what it may have been like to be an immigrant “Comin’ to Amerika” in the mid 1800’s. Two days of fun & adventure which is sure to challenge creativity & expand participant’s imagination. All participants become a member of a family and work together to meet new challenges. Dressed as an immigrant, they will meet new friends during their travels to Amerika. Past immigrants are encouraged to attend as they now are the sponsors for the new immigrants as they settle into their new life in America. Each year program has new twists and turns to offer many new challenges. This is an excellent opportunity to develop leadership skill helping others to succeed.

Girls & Dolls Tea Parties

Girls ages 6-96 are invited to a fancy tea party with your doll! There will be stories, games, dances, crafts, music centered around historical information of the mid 1800’s. Special Christmas teas will include the legend and celebration of Lucia. It will be a fun afternoon for girls of all ages!

  • Held the third weekend of the month Sept – Dec.

Green Frog Day Camp

is a partnership between the Gammalgården Museum and Growing Green Hearts LLC. Our Faith & Science Saturdays blend play with nature, Swedish engineering, Christian faith and environmental science.  Family $50 Individual $15

Immigrant for a Day

On Sunday, May 28, 2017, from 1-4pm, come experience a FREE day as an immigrant making a new life on a small farm in the town of Scandia in the late 1800’s. Visit each of the five historic and fully furnished buildings to participate in the work and play of residents of this small farm. You may be hauling water, packing your trunk for America, making butter, doing laundry and playing games at “recess” in the new school yard. Come dressed in period costume to add to your experience.

Little Immigrants

Come and see what it was like to be a child coming from their homeland country to America. Make yourself a play house, learn games they played, make a craft, and even see what it was like to be in school. If you choose, dress like children did in pioneer days.

Lucia Dagen

Welcome the Jul season with the celebration of Lucia. Follow the candlelit pathway to the GammelKyrkan for a brief Swedish prayer service. (Dress warmly—this church dates back to 1856 and has no heat.) Join us across the street at the Community Center for a full Lucia Jul Fest Breakfast and Svensgarnas Dag Choir Lucia program. The Svensgarnas Dag Girls Choir presents their lovely music program that honors Lucia and her ministry of bringing light into darkness. Gammelgården’s large exhibit of Lucia artifacts will be on display during the month of December for your enjoyment in our Passage Room of the Välkommen Hus. Lutefisk & Swedish Meatball Dinner

Enjoy a traditional holiday Swedish Smörgåsbord starring the famous Swedish Lutefisk served with cream sauce and melted butter accompanied by: glorious Swedish meatballs, rutabagas, red potatoes, rye bread, lefse, pickled beets, pickled herring, fruit soup, rice pudding and other desserts. After dinner, walk off your Lutefisk and head down to the Butik gift shop at the museum to take advantage of our annual sale. 15% discount on ALL items in addition to your member discount of 10%!

Midsommar Dag

is the most important holiday of the year and one of the most uniquely Swedish in the way it is celebrated. The Majstång (the Swedish version of a Maypole) is decorated with greens and flowers then raised in the center of town. Traditional Swedish music and dances celebrate the long days of summer!

Running of the Meatballs

is a unique and hilarious downhill race of thousands of “meatballs” (brown painted golf balls). It is not only fun to watch but an important fundraiser for the museum’s ongoing historic building renovation projects. Tickets are $5 apiece or $20 for 5 and can be purchased in the gift shop or from a roaming ticket seller before the race that starts shortly before the Taco Daze parade.  The meatballs are released and roll wildly down Oak Hill Road into the chute. Prizes are awarded to the first 10 balls down the hill. Click here for the official rules.

Spelmansstämma

The Immigrant Fiddle Fest is a long held Swedish tradition where fiddlers gather on a lovely day, play tunes and teach each other new music. The music has never been written, it is always shared by playing only! This annual festival held on the museum grounds is a great activity for families. Spelman = Fiddler / Stämma = Gathering Celebrate the immigrant fiddle with musical entertaininment, dancing and food!

Sunday Worship

in the GammelKyrkan, the oldest Lutheran church in Minnesota. Join us at 8am each summer Sunday beginning Memorial weekend through Labor Day weekend.

 

 

Swedish Language Lessons

have been taught by Signe Fluegel-Svensson at the Gammelgården Museum since 2008 with sessions in both the spring and fall. Born in Blekinge, Sweden, she has studied at the University of Vaxjo in Smaland and taught elementary school in Blekinge. Signe came to the United States and met Paul Fluegel while studying at Luther and they later married. She has continued her education by obtaining a bachelor degree from Mankato University and a Masters Degree in Education from the University of St. Thomas. Signe has been active in many Swedish cultural and educational activities and organizations, such as SVEA, American Swedish Institute, Concordia College Swedish Language Camp (Sjolunden), and the singing group Cloudberries. We are pleased to have such a versatile and knowledgeable teacher come to the Gammelgården!

3 Levels of Language Classes – Monday Evenings

  • 6-7pm Intermediate Class
  • 7-8pm Advanced Class
  • $60 for spring session (6 weeks) materials included.
  • $80 for fall session (8 weeks) materials included.
