DESCRIPTION:National Day is a day when Swedes celebrate the memory of the election of the nation’s founding father\, Gustav Vasa\, on June 6\, 1523. \nIt was also on this day that a new constitution was adopted in 1809. The name was changed to Swedish Flag Day in 1983\, but it wasn’t until 2005 that it became an official public holiday. \nOn National Day in Sweden\, people enjoy Fika with friends\, sing\, dance\, and attend village events in the town square.

DESCRIPTION:37 immigrant stories\, 32 countries of origin\, and 60 recipes – Meet the authors to this remarkable\, story-filled cookbook. \nAbout this Event \nImmigrants carry more than hope as they cross oceans and traverse continents to come to the United States. They hold tightly to remembrances of what they left behind. “Kitchens of Hope” brings together these memories from 32 countries\, offering a glimpse into the lives and kitchens of those immigrants who landed in Minnesota.\n\nThe book is a celebration of people and cuisines from around the world\, infused with the aromas of epazote and cardamom\, the tang of fish sauce\, the heat of chile peppers\, and the bite of mustard greens. Author proceeds from cookbook sales go to The Advocates for Human Rights\, a local nonprofit that has global outreach.\n\nAuthor Bios:\n\nLinda Svitak was a trial lawyer at Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath in Minneapolis for 35 years\, and has long been committed to pro bono service\, particularly in women’s\, children’s\, and international human rights. She has been a volunteer with The Advocates for Human Rights for more than a decade.\n\nLee Svitak Dean spent four decades writing about food for the Minnesota Star Tribune\, including more than two decades as editor of the Taste section. She and her staff won four James Beard awards for their work. She is the co-author of The Ultimate Minnesota Cookie Book.\n\nBook Talk: \n\nLinda and Lee will tell stories from the book about the journeys these immigrants made and the food traditions they brought with them.\n  \n \nThis event is free\, but a reservation is appreciated.
