Arvid will be spending part of the day with participants in the August 5th Dalapalooza. DESCRIPTION:Artist-in-residence Natalie Norman guides children on sewing a child-size pocket purse (kjolväskor) that American Girl Doll Kirsten wears. The kjolväskor can be worn around the waist or as a shoulder bag. \n  \nThis is the perfect introduction to sewing and embroidery for children to learn these skills as well as for advanced beginners to continue to grow their skills. At least three embroidery stitches will be used to create the kjolväskor. \n  \nNatalie also shows children the many kjolväskor that she has created and how they compare to the historic ones in Gammelgården’s collection. \n  \nIn addition to the hour and a half that children work with Natalie each day\, there are many other fun activities: \n– Tour Gammelgarden’s historic buildings and discover items early settlers used in their everyday lives. \n– Do craft projects. \n– Play pioneer games – like Hoop-and-Stick as well as try out small pioneer toys including Cup-and-Ball\, Jacob’s ladders\, Yo-Yo’s\, Spinning tops\, and more. \n– Spend time in the heirloom gardens and see what types of vegetables\, herbs\, and fruits were grown in 1850-1880. \n– Explore the prairie and discover wildlife that calls this area home. \n  \nChildren are encouraged to dress up in costumes reflective of pioneers and/or early Swedish immigrants. \n  \nOffered: Tuesday and Wednesday\, August 8-9\, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nAges: Children entering first grade through sixth grade. \nFee: $90 members/$115 non-members (all supplies included). \nBring: Lunch\, water bottle\, and a change of clothes. \nRegistration Deadline: July 20. Kayla will guide students through the beginner skills of paper quilling\, while discussing tools and various techniques for creating multiple coil shapes and sizes. DESCRIPTION:A costumed narrator provides an overview of the history of tea in Western society. Tea is prepared as a demonstration and served at a tea table by other costumed interpreters in proper upper-class mid-nineteenth-century form. Commentary is provided concerning manners\, language\, the social hierarchy\, and the kinds of accompaniments that would have been offered. \nParticipants leave the event with a working knowledge regarding the preparation of a mid-nineteenth-century tea\, and the rules involved.
