SUMMARY:Canceled - Elsa Beskow Day Camp – Bringing Swedish Literature Alive
DESCRIPTION:Elsa Beskow was a Swedish children’s book author and illustrator who was often called the ‘Beatrix Potter’ of Scandinavia. She published forty books with her own text and images. \nBeskow frequently combined reality with elements from the fairy tale world. Children meet elves or goblins\, and farm animals talk with people. Central themes were the relationships between children and adults and children’s independent initiative. Her work “depicted a happy home atmosphere in the Swedish countryside of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.” \nIn the July camp\, campers listen to and do hands-on activities related to images and/or text in Children of the Forest (1910) and Emily and Daisy (1941). \nEach day of Elsa Beskow Camp\, campers have opportunities do fun\, hands-on learning at the Discovery Stations; have lunch and recess; and play pioneer games. \n  \nOther sessions and projects during the July Elsa Beskow Camp include: \n  \nChildren of the Forest \n– Learn all about owls and discover what type of food they eat by dissecting an owl pellet. \n– Discover two types of food that are grown in the wild: mushrooms and blueberries. Make a Swedish blueberry drink. \n– Explore the pond and discover what wildlife\, aquatic life\, and insects make Gammelgården their home. See a collection of aquatic insects. \n– Learn about the difference between wild and domestic rabbits\, and see domestic rabbits up close. \n– Hear fascinating facts about frogs and then make a pop-up frog card. \n– Explore the Old Church/One-Room Schoolhouse and Immigrant House and learn how they were built. Try to build a small log structure like the early settlers would have done. \n  \nEmily and Daisy \n– Learn about cows and see where they would have lived in Gammelgården’s barn. See museum artifacts from the Scandia Creamery. Taste and compare different types of milk: cow\, goat\, oat\, and almond. \n– See how early settlers transformed wood into fences\, spoons\, and artwork with simple tools. Create a one-of-a-kind item using scrap wood! \n– Search for clover\, wild strawberries\, and other small plants in the open fields and restored prairie. \n– Learn how Swedish biologist and physician Carl Linnaeus developed a system to name over 12\,000 species of plants and animals. Touch and hold rubber replicas of fish to explore the six senses of fish and understand how those senses influence behavior. Using the Japanese art form of gyotaku\, use paint to transfer the image of the fish onto a sheet of paper. \n– Discover dogs of the world and their countries of origin. Learn about the Swedish Lapphund that was used by the Sami people for herding and guarding their reindeer; and the Jämthund\, also known as the Swedish Elkhound\, a breed of dog that closely resembles their ancestor – the wolf. \n– Explore the kitchen or cooking areas of the Pastor’s House (Prast Hus) and Peasants Cottage (Stuga) and see how cooking was done with wood. See recipes and sample food from the Housekeepers Cookbook\, a book in Gammelgården’s collection from 1894. \n  \n\nOffered: Wednesday and Thursday\, July 24-25\, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nAges: Children entering first grade through sixth grade.\nFee: $130 members/$145 non-members (all supplies included).\nRegister: Register at Gammelgården’s EventBrite page.\nRegistration Deadline: July 3.
Her work “depicted a happy home atmosphere in the Swedish countryside of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.” \nIn the August camp\, campers listen to and do hands-on activities related to images and/or text in The Sun Egg (1932) and The Children of Hat Cottage (1930). \nEach day at Elsa Beskow Camp\, campers have opportunities to do fun\, hands-on learning at the Discovery Stations; have lunch and recess; and play pioneer games. \n  \nOther sessions and projects during the August Elsa Beskow Camp include: \n  \nWednesday \n– Identify common Minnesota birds and their eggs by shape and size. Create a mixed-media bird using collage and stamping. \n– Learn about sweet and bitter oranges\, and sample types of oranges available in Minnesota grocery stores. Dissect an orange to learn the different parts of this fruit. Make and sample orangeade – a beverage that combines freshly-squeezed orange juice and lemonade. \n– Take a nature walk to explore the restored prairie and wetlands at Gammelgården. See the bluebird houses along the bluebird trail. \n–  Using the sun’s power\, create a cyanotype printing using items found on the museum’s grounds \n– Learn about lizards in Minnesota and make a lizard lair to put in a garden at home. Create a colorful lizard from pipe cleaners. \n– See how children learned both in the Old Church/One-Room Schoolhouse and Immigrant House during the mid- to late-1800s. Discover similarities and differences between education in the 1800s to that of the 2000s. \n  \nThursday \n–See the many steps for creating clothes – from carding and spinning wool to weaving yarn on a loom and sewing fabric by hand. Learn to weave with yarn on a simple loom. \n– Explore different types of homes used by humans and wildlife. Discover what types of birds were born in and fledged from the bluebird houses on Gammelgården’s bluebird trail. Identify local birds and their habitats by making a diorama. \n – Learn about fire safety from a local fire department. See fire equipment and a fire truck up close. (An alternate fire safety activity will be done if the fire department is responding to a fire or other emergency.) \n– Discover how spiders weave their webs and how they find their prey by feel. Create a wax-resist painting of a spider web. \n– See a variety of shoes in Gammelgården’s collection including those made from birchbark\, wood\, leather\, and satin. Learn about the shoemaking process in the 1800s; and the difference between a shoemaker and a cobbler. Learn about shoe parts by deconstructing different types of shoes. \n– Explore the kitchen or cooking areas of the Pastor’s House and Peasant Cottage\, and see how cooking and baking were done without electricity\, running water\, an oven\, or a refrigerator. See recipes and sample food from the Housekeepers Cookbook\, a book in Gammelgården’s collection from 1894. \n  \n\nOffered: Wednesday and Thursday\, August 7-8\, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\nAges: Children entering first grade through sixth grade.\nFee: $130 members/$145 non-members (all supplies included).\nRegister: Register for camp at Gammelgården’s EventBrite page.\nRegistration Deadline: July 17. SUMMARY:Fars Dag (Father's Day) in Sweden
DESCRIPTION:Fars Dag – or Father’s Day – is celebrated on the second Sunday in November in Sweden\, instead of in June. Father’s Day in Sweden was initially celebrated in June\, but then various commercial organizations wanted it moved in 1931\, so it wouldn’t compete with Mother’s Day (Mors dag) on the last Sunday of May.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Crocheting
DESCRIPTION:This beginning-level course is wonderful for those who want to learn how to crochet\, but need some guidance about how to start.  It also is a great class for those who have crocheted many years ago and need a little encouragement to get back into it. \nFirst\, you learn about the best hooks and yarn and then you work on a simple square pattern of single crochet stitches that you can be made into a dishcloth\, hot pad\, or cup cozy. Cara helps students troubleshoot any issues and learn to make those perfect edges. Once the basic stitch is understood\, students may move on to other stitches and projects. \nMaterials that are supplied:  \n\nCotton blend yarn\nCrochet hook\nStitch markers\nPrinted pattern\n\nAge Requirement:\n\nStudents ages 10 and older may attend this class. Ages 10-15 must register with another registered adult. \nRegistration:  \nSign up here:  https://tinyurl.com/crochetingatGG \nCancellation Policy: \nUp to 3 weeks before the event – 50% refund. Under 3 weeks before the event\, no refunds. \nAbout the Artist: \nHello! I’m Cara. I started my career as a features writer for newspapers and magazines\, but eventually realized I wanted to expand my work into my lifelong passion for crafting. I have always been inspired by my crafty and thrifty grandmother\, Mary Marie Mason\, who taught me how important it was to take time out to make something with your hands. Now I design patterns\, teach classes\, and sell my handmade items. \nIn my knitting and crochet classes\, my goal is to build confidence in beginners by starting with chunky knit projects you can finish in one class. Once you’ve mastered that project\, you can move on to smaller and smaller needles and yarn. I love the moments when it clicks for students. \nMore fun facts: I grew up in Kansas\, then lived in Des Moines\, IA\, Boulder\, CO\, and the San Francisco Bay Area before moving to Saint Paul\, MN with my husband\, Mike. We have two great kids\, Harper and Max.

SUMMARY:Puppet Show by Open Eye Theatre at Gammelgården Museum
DESCRIPTION:Visit Gammelgården Museum on the 4th of July weekend to see The Adventures of Katie Tomatie by Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis.\n\nWith school out for the summer\, Katie doesn’t want to do anything but watch her tomatoes grow. Digging in her garden\, she unearths Mr. Boo Boo\, a very excitable skeleton. This unlikely duo sets off for a day of adventure\, and Katie’s ‘do-nothing’ day becomes the best day ever!\n\nSpend the day relaxing at the museum – watching the puppet show\, having a picnic table on the 11-acre grounds\, seeing the exhibits in the Welcome House\, going on a tour of the historic buildings\, and shopping in the Butik (gift shop).\n\nThe puppet show is designed with children in mind\, but is enjoyable for all ages and those who are young at heart.
