SUMMARY:Museum Closed for Juneteenth
DESCRIPTION:Gammelgården Museum will be closed in observance of Juneteenth. \nWhat is Juneteenth? From Wikipedia: \nJuneteenth\, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day\, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. \nThe holiday’s name is a portmanteau of the words “June” and “nineteenth”\, as it was on June 19\, 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. \n In the Civil War period\, slavery came to an end in various areas of the United States at different times. Many enslaved Southerners escaped\, demanded wages\, stopped work\, or took up arms against the Confederacy of slave states. \nIn January 1865\, Congress finally proposed the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution for national abolition of slavery. By June 1865\, almost all enslaved were freed by the victorious Union Army\, or abolition laws in some of the remaining U.S. states. When the national abolition amendment was ratified in December\, the remaining enslaved in Delaware and in Kentucky were freed.

SUMMARY:Puppet Making with In the Heart of Beast Puppet Theater
DESCRIPTION:In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre (HOBT) will be at Gammelgården Museum with two teaching artists who will provide a 2-hour puppet making workshop on the theme of celebrating Midsummer\, Summer\, and/or flowers. This is a workshop for participants of all ages – from children in Kindergarten through adults. Participants younger than 16 years old should be accompanied by an adult. \nRegistration is required as there are a limited number of spots available. Registrations will be accepted through EventBrite and will be filled on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nINFORMATION ABOUT HOBT \nYou will start with water\, flour\, newspaper\, and paint. Add a large measure of imagination and a dollop of artistry to make stories about our world come alive through puppets. This is in the Heart of the Beast’s 50-year-old puppet recipe. \nSince 1973\, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre has helped to create and cultivate the puppetry community in the Twin Cities. \nHOBT is a community of artists working within the larger community to create magic together. They make puppets large and small\, monstrous\, beautiful\, silly\, human\, plant\, and animal. \nYou can see many of their puppets at their Free Puppet Library every first and third Saturday of the month; and they often visit community spaces to engage with neighbors around the Twin Cities Metro and beyond! \nThey use gestures\, voice\, form\, and color\, giving life to puppets that help tell stories to represent the world as it is and as we dream it could be. \n

SUMMARY:Puppet Show by Open Eye Theatre at Gammelgården Museum
DESCRIPTION:Visit Gammelgården Museum on the 4th of July weekend to see The Adventures of Katie Tomatie by Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis.\n\nWith school out for the summer\, Katie doesn’t want to do anything but watch her tomatoes grow. Digging in her garden\, she unearths Mr. Boo Boo\, a very excitable skeleton. This unlikely duo sets off for a day of adventure\, and Katie’s ‘do-nothing’ day becomes the best day ever!\n\nSpend the day relaxing at the museum – watching the puppet show\, having a picnic table on the 11-acre grounds\, seeing the exhibits in the Welcome House\, going on a tour of the historic buildings\, and shopping in the Butik (gift shop).\n\nThe puppet show is designed with children in mind\, but is enjoyable for all ages and those who are young at heart.

SUMMARY:Fiber Arts Club
DESCRIPTION:The Fiber Arts Club at Gammelgården Museum will meet from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. Bring a project you’re working on\, and join in conversation and community. This is a relaxing gathering for people with projects in progress or in the planning stages. \n  \nThis is the perfect opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and work on your small projects in knitting\, crocheting\, hand sewing\, needlefelting\, mending\, embroidery\, cross stitching\, tatting\, weaving\, needlepoint\, lacemaking\, macrame\, spinning\, rug hooking\, string art\, or any other fiber art. \n  \nThe club offers people a chance to work on projects\, learn new skills\, get opinions on projects\, and make suggestions to others. It’s a great way to make progress on your creative endeavors. \n\n\n  \nIMPORTANT FOR THIS GROUP – PLEASE READ: \n1. Smaller projects only due to limited room size. So\, unless it can fit in your lap (such as the beginning of a project)\, please leave larger projects like afghans\, large sweaters\, etc. at home. \n2. Small supply totes only. Keep large needlework bags\, boxes of supplies\, etc. at home. There is not enough table and floor space to support items of that size. \n3. Work on a project that you bring to the Fiber Arts Club. Making progress on your project while chit-chatting is the purpose of the group and respect for others’ productivity is important. \n4. Any coffee\, tea\, or soda/pop must be covered.

SUMMARY:Safeguarding the Past: Archival Book Cover Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make archival book covers for two of Gammelgården Museum’s historic books in its collection. You will have an opportunity to handle books from the 1800s and early 1900s\, and provide an archival-quality book cover for them. \nBy creating these covers\, you will acquire the skills to design covers for your special and historical books at home. \nThere is no cost for this workshop\, as participants will be helping to protect the museum’s book collection. \nRegistration is required to ensure there are enough supplies and space for participants. (Register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/safeguarding-the-past-archival-book-cover-workshop-tickets-1415589007829?aff=oddtdtcreator ) \nThis workshop is for 15+ year-olds and adults. \nThis workshop is being led by Paige Ewert\, one of Gammelgården’s interns. Paige is a Senior at St. Olaf College with a degree in History and Art History. She has worked at her college’s archives for three years\, with a specialization in books and printed materials. Drawing on the methods and knowledge gained from a class with the Minnesota Art Conservation Center\, this class focuses on creating boxes and book covers for any book\, from your favorite novel to a 100-year-old family heirloom Bible.
