SUMMARY:National Day in Sweden
DESCRIPTION:National Day is a day when Swedes celebrate the memory of the election of the nation’s founding father\, Gustav Vasa\, on June 6\, 1523. \nIt was also on this day that a new constitution was adopted in 1809. The name was changed to Swedish Flag Day in 1983\, but it wasn’t until 2005 that it became an official public holiday. \nOn National Day in Sweden\, people enjoy Fika with friends\, sing\, dance\, and attend village events in the town square.

SUMMARY:Northern Bedrock Replaces Logs in the Pastor's House
DESCRIPTION:Three crews from Northern Bedrock will be replacing between 11-14 logs in the Pastor’s House on the northwest and southeast sides of the building. The logs have rotted from age as well as water damage\, and will be replaced by 15 crew members. \nThe logs will be chainsawed to the approximate size. Once that step is complete\, each log will be hand-hewn\, as the Swedish immigrants did to build the Pastor’s Home in the 1800s. \nThe crews arrive on the 9th\, work from the 10th-16th\, and then pack up and travel back to Duluth on the 17th.

SUMMARY:Museum Closed for Juneteenth
DESCRIPTION:Gammelgården Museum will be closed in observance of Juneteenth. \nWhat is Juneteenth? From Wikipedia: \nJuneteenth\, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day\, is a federal holiday in the United States. It is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. \nThe holiday’s name is a portmanteau of the words “June” and “nineteenth”\, as it was on June 19\, 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War. \n In the Civil War period\, slavery came to an end in various areas of the United States at different times. Many enslaved Southerners escaped\, demanded wages\, stopped work\, or took up arms against the Confederacy of slave states. \nIn January 1865\, Congress finally proposed the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution for national abolition of slavery. By June 1865\, almost all enslaved were freed by the victorious Union Army\, or abolition laws in some of the remaining U.S. states. When the national abolition amendment was ratified in December\, the remaining enslaved in Delaware and in Kentucky were freed.

SUMMARY:Crochet a Rag Rug
DESCRIPTION:Rag rugs have a long history and continue the tradition of reusing fabrics in a sustainable way. Traditional braided rugs can last years\, but over time the thread used to sew the braids together can deteriorate and create holes. With crocheted rugs\, there is no sewing meaning they hold up better. In this class\, students will learn how to create a smooth join to connect strips of scrap fabric and crochet them into the start of a rug.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA prior knowledge of crochet is helpful\, but not required. Students should bring a size N\, P\, or Q-sized crochet hook\, a pair of sharp scissors\, and cotton scraps* of their choice.\n\n\nThe cost of the class is $55 and includes handouts with instructions\, rug fabrics\, and crochet hooks if a student doesn’t have one.\n\n\nRegistration information and a link will be forthcoming in mid-April.\n\n\n\n*Students should gather scrap cotton fabric in colors of their choice. Old sheets\, cotton shirts\, and T-shirts work well. Additional fabric will be available. If possible\, cut into 3/4 to 1-inch strips. Rotary cutters will be available in class.\n\n\n\n\n\nTheresa Hornstein has been crafting since childhood. She teaches classes in crochet\, knitting\, natural dyes\, felting\, and sustainable crafting. She is a current member of Nice Girls of the North and a former member of the Bayfield Artists Guild.
