SUMMARY:Singlade Balls (Singlade Bollar)
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to make singlade balls or singlade bollar (traditional hand-stitched balls made from wool yarn). These can be used as a child’s toy or toy for a cat. It’s a great way to use those colorful bits of yarn in your stash. \nArchival evidence from museums in Sweden indicates that the craft started around the early 1800s. Singlade bollar have been found in southern Sweden\, Denmark\, and northern Germany. The craft is likely to have been spread throughout the region via the Baltic Sea trade route. \nKate Sterner learned this handicraft from her Danish grandfather and has created a website dedicated to preserving and furthering this craft. Join Kate and have fun keeping a tradition alive. \nSkill level: Beginner. \nStudent Age: 16 years and over. \nSupplies needed: Scissors\, a sharp\, large-eye\, 3-inch darning needle (or purchase one from Kate for $1)\, and worsted weight\, 4-ply wool yarn in as many colors as you want. Kate also will have plenty of colors of yarn from her own stash to use in class. \nNote: Students should not expect to complete the project in this time. However\, Kate will teach students what they need to complete their Singlade Balls at home. (Normally a ball takes about 6-8 hours to make.) \nClass Size: Limited to 4 students. \nRegister here: Eventbrite. \nCancellation Policy: Up to 3 weeks before the event – 50% refund. Under 3 weeks before the event\, no refunds.\n\n \nINSTRUCTOR INFORMATION \nKate Sterner’s Danish grandfather taught her how to make singlade balls (singlade bollar) when she was 10 or 11 years old. He learned from his mother while he was a boy in Denmark and enjoyed passing the craft down to the next generation. Though several of her cousins learned the craft from their grandfather\, Kate is the one who kept making singlade balls throughout the years\, teaching others who found the balls intriguing. \n  \nSWEDISH PRONUNCIATION \nSinglade\, pronounced:  sing’ la deh. Singlade is a Swedish word that has a couple of meanings. The base of the verb is “singla\,” meaning to toss or fling. However\, in this case\, the verb describes the embroidery technique used to stitch these balls. So\, you “singla” a ball.

SUMMARY:Story Sharing at the Alan Hagstrom Memorial Benches
DESCRIPTION:This Spring\, Alan Hagstrom’s two daughters\, Sarah and Karen\, and Sarah’s partner Ro installed two benches on the grounds of Gammelgården as a memorial to Alan. They chose two benches because their father’s defining priority in life was to inspire\, foster\, and facilitate the development of community. \nThe two benches will invite people to have a rest; take a load off; share stories and perspectives; get to know each other better; and experience the views of the prairie\, the garden\, and the Old Church together. \nSarah and Ro recently planted two native trees nearby that will eventually provide shade for people using the benches as well as sustenance to the birds in the winter and early spring. \nWhen they installed the benches\, they also gently regraded the area to better accommodate the benches and their guests\, and spent the summer nursing the grass back to health. \nThey recently cut the tape that was protecting the area\, so the benches and trees are now available for use. They thought it would be fitting to hold an informal dedication ceremony on the second anniversary of Alan’s death. \nThey would like to invite anyone who knew Alan to gather at the benches and share stories of him and what he meant to them. Everyone has experienced a different aspect of him and his life\, and you never know when one of your stories may surprise and delight someone else\, who may have never guessed\, for example\, that he absolutely LOVED to play Animal Crossing in the last years of his life (and felt a real affection for each of his villagers) or that he mused more than once that he might like to work for a rideshare platform in his retirement so he could meet people while helping them get wherever they were going. \nMeeting\, helping\, and getting to know people really was what he lived for. So let’s meet and get to know him and each other a little bit better on October 27th at the benches. There will be chairs for those who do not bring their own; and a portable fire pit or two in case it’s chilly out there. (And\, if it’s too chilly\, we’ll move the gathering inside.) \nFeel free to bring snacks for yourself and/or to share with others; and be thinking of stories you may want to share. \nFor those on Facebook who would like to be reminded of the event\, visit:  https://www.facebook.com/events/1053605179598399

SUMMARY:Fars Dag (Father's Day) in Sweden
DESCRIPTION:Fars Dag – or Father’s Day – is celebrated on the second Sunday in November in Sweden\, instead of in June. Father’s Day in Sweden was initially celebrated in June\, but then various commercial organizations wanted it moved in 1931\, so it wouldn’t compete with Mother’s Day (Mors dag) on the last Sunday of May.
