Carved Nusnäs Pig
In Sweden, the family pig(s) were a source of income and holiday food…especially the Christmas Ham (Julskinka).
Some years, the pig was more important as income than the Christmas Ham. So, the wooden pig – like this carved Nusnäs pig – was placed on the Julbord and the family could truthfully say they had ham (skinka) on the Julbord.
The decorative painting is in the style of Nusnäs, Dalarna, Sweden. This piece has a slot on the top so it could be used as a “piggy bank.” However, there is NO way to get the saved money out!
This artifact was gifted to Gammelgarden in 2005 by Barbara Glaser, Advokat.
