Nice Fish Visits Gammelgården for Possible Film Location

In May, we were contacted by a location scout for Nice Fish – a movie that will be filmed in Minnesota in 2026. The Location Scout (Anne), Director (Mark), Writer (Jim), Producer (Todd), and Production Designer (April) visited the museum on Wednesday, May 28th.

We found out on the 28th that they were looking to replicate a Carl Larsson painting from 1896 titled Breakfast Under the Big Birch Tree.

They were thrilled to see a potential location by the Pastor’s House; and enjoyed seeing the Stuga as well. The crew also liked the openness of the land; and that different views of the pond and pasture looked as if it could have been Sweden in the 1800s.

Hunter (Gammelgården’s Marketing/PR Coordinator) and her friend, Adrienne, are standing with Mark Rylance in the photo above. Rylance, who was thfirst artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe in London, is an English actor, playwright, and theatre director. He is known for his roles on screen and stage – including the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis.

Rylance has received an Academy Award, three BAFTA Awards, two Olivier Awards, and three Tony Awards. In 2016, Rylance was included in the Time 100 list of the world’s most influential people. One year later, in 2017, he was made a knight by Queen Elizabeth II.

We will hear within the next few months if Gammelgården is selected to be one of the sites featured in the movie, Nice Fish.
