Northern Bedrock Returns to Gammelgården for Restoration Work

Heidi Granke provides information about the background
about the Pastor’s House to the Northern Bedrock crew.
A crew from Northern Bedrock Historic Preservation Corps is back for another week of work on the Pastor’s House.

Today’s focus was on removing the storm windows from the house, finishing the removal of the Nu-Wood sheathing and drywall in the kitchen, and getting wood (specifically, Douglas Fir, which we found out is difficult to find) to make new window screens for all 11 windows. This will help with air circulation and reduce moisture in the house.

Heidi Granke (Heritage Architecture Studio, LLC) and Mark Johnston (Historic Design Consulting LLC) were both on site to provide guidance to Joseph (new crew leader), Marcus (returning crew member), and Hannah (new crew member).

Heidi also was doing more research on water infiltration in multiple areas of the building (an issue that has been present for 10+ years) and examining the paint colors used on the windows.

Interestingly, the gray paint used on the windows is a color that was not original to the building. When Heidi examined paint chips under a microscope, she found that the original historic base layer (under several layers of paint) was not gray – it was very similar in color to this contemporary Sherwin William paint: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/…/yellow…/SW6135-ecru .

Multiple layers of paint were on the windows,
with the ecru paint being the original.
It looks like a change in appearance is coming to the Pastor’s House as we restore the building and bring parts of it back to what it once looked like!
