Dala Floda Embroidery on a Vaska/Kjolsäck

This is a beautiful example of Dala floda embroidery on a vaska or kjolsäck (skirt sack). Dala floda comes from the province of Dalarna, Sweden.

This would have been worn on the outside of a woman’s folk drakt, clipped to the sash, and functioned like a pocket or purse. A woman would have carried personal items in her vaska or kjolsäck.

Originally, the vaska or kjolsäck held oats and the young girls would sprinkle the oats on the path in front of the lead cow when bringing them to the barn. They evolved into a more elaborate and highly-decorated part of the folk drakt.
