Birch Bark Water Jar and Cup
Although this birch bark water jar and drinking cup look like it wouldn’t hold water, this is actually a very clever design and concept. When birch bark gets wet, it swells. So, any holes or gaps in the sides disappear when it is filled with water which makes it watertight.
Birch bark weaving often is featured in Scandinavian traditions. When new immigrants settled in Minnesota, birch trees were prevalent. The Swedish immigrants took full advantage of this valuable resource and wove the bark into many different things including baskets, decorations, and water bottles.
