Chip-Carved Plate

This chip-carved plate is an example of Swedish woodcarving techniques, and is based on very precise mathematical dimensions and designs. Extremely sharp, small knives are used to create the chip-carved object.
This plate is an outstanding example of the craft with multiple tiny chips removed. It was made and donated by Walter Grittner of St. Paul who was a frequent visiting artist at Gammelgården artists fairs. Walter was well into his late 80’s when he created this piece. His work was displayed in over 18 countries and all 50 states, so Gammelgården is fortunate to have one of Walter’s chip-carved plates.
Walter passed away in April 2022 at the age of 103 years old.
