Vasa Junior Folk Dancers at Midsommardagen

Vasa Junior Folk Dancers performed around the midsommarstång or majstång (maypole) at our Midsommardagen event this past Saturday, and they did a spectacular job! These dancers wore Swedish National Folkdräkt, noted by the bright blue and yellow garments adorned with daisies on the girls, and the boys wore red vests with tan trousers. The Vasa Junior Folk Dancers is an organization that teaches traditional Swedish dances to children of all ages!

 

In the video above, you can see a variety of folk dances performed by talented youth. The young dancers are led by Kristin Johnson and practice two times a month in Minneapolis at the American Swedish Institute. All of the dances they performed are Swedish folk dances that have existed for nearly 300 years.

At the end of their program, the Vasa Junior Folk Dancers invited everyone, of all ages, to join them in a series of large group dances.

If these performances pique your interest, your family can join the Vasa Junior Folk Dancers. They accept everyone from ages 3 to 18. The membership fee is $60 per family, and there are opportunities for parents to help organize events throughout the year to support the folk dance group.
