Ice Fishing Wood Carving

This is a typical Swedish flat plane carving called “Ice Fishing” that was gifted to Gammelgården in 2021 by Jim Norman, long-time Gammelgarden tour guide and Board member.

The Swedish flat-plane style of woodcarving is a style of figure carving. The figures are carved in large flat planes, primarily created using a carving knife. Tool marks are left in the carving and very little (if any) sanding or rounding is done.

Although “Ice Fishing” bears a pencil signature on the underside of the base, it is unreadable. Unfortunately, the gentleman’s fishing pole also is missing. Maybe that’s why there is no smile on his face.
