Leather Case for Gun Patches and a Powder Flask
This case held patches for a gun as well as a powder flask. A powder flask was a small, portable container designed to hold gunpowder. It was indispensable for charging and priming firearms of all types. Without powder flasks, firearms were of little use to their owners.
On some flasks, there is an adjustable nozzle that ensures an equal amount of powder is dispensed each time the lever is thrown.
Patches were used to clean firearms. The ordinary firing action of a gun releases fine particles of gunpowder, metals (lead and copper from the bullet moving over the riflings), and other contaminates into the inner spaces of a firearm. This may cause malfunctions or, in rarer cases of extreme buildup, may raise the barrel pressure too high causing the firearm to explode upon being fired.
