Calf Yoke

This calf yoke is made with green wood and allowed the neck piece flexibility to be placed around the neck of an oxen calf. The calf got used to the feel of having something around its neck, and also helped it to learn the signals of gee and haw. Often there were two oxen calves that were trained as a team.

There is a chapter in Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder that talks about Almanzo’s experience training oxen calves.

This piece came to Gammelgarden in 2004 as a gift from Advokat Barbara Glaser.
